Glass splashbacks can look fabulous in your kitchen and, while not suited to every style, can look modern and sleek. Include an added dimension by using a metallic finish or a different type of patterned glass if you choose to make an impact. Always make sure when ordering that the glass is fully toughened for safety.

Two different types of glass are available: ‘clear’ or ‘float’. Float glass has a pale green tinge, so keep in mind that whatever colour is painted on it will be distorted by this colour. ‘Starphire’ has no colour, so your colour of choice will be a true reflection of what is painted on the back. The glass can be painted in the same hues or tones already selected for walls and ceilings, adding elegance to a neutral palette. Or perhaps you want to add a splash of colour and use a ‘burnt orange’ or ‘vivid red’ to add some excitement. Whatever you choose will look fantastic and be a breeze to clean – just spray and wipe!

Glass is reflective, so in a home with lots of light you will see reflections all the time. Keep this in mind when you’re selecting your splashback. Another option is a mirror splashback. These look great when you are lucky enough to enjoy a view of the ocean, valley or a beautiful garden, as they will bring a little of the outdoors in!

Barbecue or ‘Al Fresco’ areas, as they are being called lately, seem to be increasing in popularity. Many new homes are being designed around them to take full advantage of our fantastic Aussie lifestyle – is there anything better than spending an afternoon with friends and a barbecue?

There are a few Corian colours that can be used outdoors, but natural granite is highly recommended. Jim from Central Coast Granite advises the following: any natural granite or engineered stones can be used if the area is undercover. When your barbecue area gets more than a couple of hours of sun, only use natural granite, no engineered stones or marbles. If completely out in the open, dark coloured natural stone is advised as light stones can be stained by leaves. Stainless steel is another great option for a barbecue area. You can also have a moulded stainless sink and various benchtop thicknesses that will look great for a long time to come.

All joinery for barbecue areas needs to be covered. There are some excellent choices available and some fabulous looking glass doors that give a great modern twist. Polyurethane, in your choice of colour, can be matched to your internal cabinetry giving a sense of cohesion to your decorating design.

Handles or no handles? This is a big choice when it comes to kitchens! The popular choice at the moment is joinery that looks more like furniture, not like a kitchen. A combination of integrated appliances and flush-fitting cabinetry without obvious handles will help to achieve this look.

Joinery in overhead cupboards can be left 15mm longer, so they can simply be pulled open. Otherwise touch catches can be added. Slim handles can be routered into the joinery in some cases, where they will be hardly noticeable but still effective. 45-degree handles or ‘sharknose’ can be used with both lamiwood and polyurethane doors. However, they will drive the price up, as these need to be cut and then dowelled to ensure durability.

Handles can be a major feature of your new kitchen. There are so many available that you are sure to find the right one for you. The square handles that have been fashionable for the last few years can be very sharp for little ones. If you have a young family at home, it’s a good rule of thumb to run your fingers around the edges of a handle before selecting, to check if it will be suitable.

Any handle with a projecting end will tend to get snagged in pockets, and odd-shaped knobs with only one screw attachment can swing around after time. This always looks wrong, so when selecting knobs try to pick ones that are either symmetrical or have two screws joining them to the cabinetry to stop this happening.

If you are having a traditional kitchen or a ‘French provincial’, there are some beautiful ceramic, iron or glass knobs and handles available, along with the ‘shell’ type in different finishes. Marina Isles do some lovely ones that are a bit out of the ordinary and will add a beautiful touch to your new kitchen or furniture.
